Laura Henderson is the executive director at Pasado’s Safe Haven, a Sultan-based nonprofit that is fighting to end animal cruelty and create a more compassionate world. Learn about Laura Henderson…

Hometown: Seattle, WA

First job: Teaching swimming lessons to kids.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in WA: I love to take advantage of all of the ways to connect with nature that the PNW offers, whether that be out on the water or on a hiking trail or a ski slope.

Your biggest accomplishment and why: Building a life where every day my actions align with my values.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: My own sense of doubt. In 2010, I realized that my corporate career was not fulfilling me anymore. It was difficult to confront the fact that I might need to step into the unknown to find a true sense of purpose. Taking that leap despite not having all the answers was one of the most difficult things I’ve done. It started me down a meandering path that was often full of angst and confusion, but ultimately it led me to the work that I am doing now.

Someone who inspires you and why: “The conscience of the animal rights movement” (Gene Baur) is an inspiration to me. He has such a beautiful way of talking about the difficult topic of animal agriculture. He invites people in instead of turning them off.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Find a way to keep a healthy balance, which can be hard when you are passionate about something! By taking care of yourself along the way you can continue to make a difference without burning out.

Favorite quote: “Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves.” —Pema Chodron

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I have no idea! I try not to think too much about what others might be thinking.

What makes someone fabulous: Tuning into your heart and following your own path, regardless of where it may take you.
