Uptown Grill Olympia Restaurant

When it comes to cuisine, the culinary team at Olympia’s Uptown Grill certainly isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel — and that’s a very, very good thing. This downtown eatery, which was founded by friends, serves some seriously tasty classic American food that doesn’t need fanfare to be fantastic.

Olympia’s dining scene is pretty great — but even in a city with plenty of bistros, cafes, and brew pubs, this spot stands out. Uptown Grill occupies two rooms: one sultry and inviting with chandeliers, modern art, and plush seating, and one more quiet and spacious with a back bar reminiscent of an old-fashioned soda fountain.

Many spots claim to have good craft cocktails, but this place can back that up with their drink list. No matter what your drink of choice is, you’ll find it here — and that includes a substantial selection of non-alcoholic options. And of course, the beer and wine list is top notch.

The food here may be classic American fare, but it’s far from boring. The sweet potato fries are perfectly crispy and slightly savory, the made-from-scratch clam chowder will give any local seafood spot’s option a run for its money, the steaks melt in your mouth, and the Grain Bowl section is perfect for anyone craving a healthy meal.

But it’s safe to say that nothing on the dinner menu can ever top the chicken pot pie. The entree comes sizzling out of the scratch kitchen in a massive dish, and it’s intimidatingly large. But as soon as you pierce the crust with your fork, you’ll do your best to finish it all in one setting. You probably won’t be successful, but it truly is that good. The pot pie is stuffed with peas, onions, and carrots  — and it’s truly no wonder it’s the top seller.

If you manage to save room for dessert here, you won’t regret it. The selection rotates daily, and it’s always worth asking what the current selection is.

In addition to the diverse, delicious dinner menu, Uptown Grill serves lunch on weekdays (with featured dinner menu items as well as an enviable selection of sandwiches) and brunch on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with everyone’s favorite detail: bottomless mimosas.

If you can plan a visit between 2 and 5 p.m. on a weekday, you can save big with the happy hour menu — we’re talking $5 well drinks, $6.95 sweet potato fries, and Alaskan cod fish and chips for under $11. Just remember that it’s dine-in only.
