Restaurant of the Week: Smith Tower Observatory Bar

Once the tallest building in Seattle, the iconic Smith Tower first opened its doors on July 4, 1914. Now, 106 years later, it is home to one of the city’s hidden happy hour treasures.

Located on the 35th floor, the Smith Tower observatory and bar allows you to sip and nibble all while taking in the breathtaking views of the Puget Sound and Seattle. Remodeled in 2016, the Smith Tower now offers a Prohibition-style full-service restaurant and bar.

Enjoy in-house barrel-aged cocktails or happy hour for two while experiencing 360-degree views from the observation deck. Looking for something unique? “Straight Up by Night” is open Wednesday to Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and allows you to step inside one of the historic Otis Elevators for a ride up to the 35th floor. Until just recently, these elevators were manually operated by attendants who would greet you upon arriving inside the building (the original panels are still there). The gold trim along the elevator doors is original to the building, along with the stunning marble that catches your eye the minute you step inside.

“Straight Up by Night” is the perfect weeknight experience for locals and tourists alike, and gives you access to the observation deck (sorry, no drinks allowed outside). Once you’re done exploring the views, sit down in this intimate setting to enjoy one of the bar’s signature cocktails, like the Yesler Old Fashioned or the refreshing Scandinavian Getaway. There is also a selection of wines, beers and ciders to choose from. Hungry? Try one of the $12 Bento boxes for two, or make it a double for just $20, which includes a fresh roll, hummus with veggies, chilled edamame and shrimp cocktail.

Smith Tower observatory tickets are $12. For Smith Tower’s full menu, visit www.smithtower.com.
