Opal Peachey is a performer, writer and theatre maker. “I’ve graced the stages of the Triple Door, ACT Theater, Book-It Theater and many a dimly lit venue on Capitol Hill. I’m primarily a company member at Nordo, an immersive dinner theater with two venues in Seattle’s Pioneer Square.” Since becoming a mom to Hero, Peachey has started a blog, “The Artist Mama,” a creative narrative about her experience as an artist and primary caregiver of her son.

Mom to: Hero, 14 months

Hometown: I went to Puyallup High School but have a blended family, and we moved around a lot in Pierce and King Counties growing up. Since coming to Seattle to attend Cornish College of the Arts in the early aughts, the city on Sound is my home.

Favorite ways to spend family time in WA: My partner and I love disc golfing. There are plenty of courses in the Pacific Northwest – though we usually end up in Sea-Tac. I disc golfed through my pandemic pregnancy, and Hero is old enough now to enjoy the park as well. Also, the Woodland Park Zoo is a favorite place to meet up with other mom friends.

Your most rewarding motherhood moment: Hearing “Mama” said with such love, and watching my family and friends enjoy my son’s sweet nature.

Biggest challenge as a mom: There is a seismic shift happening right now with the return of live performance, and it’s terrifying to think of all I lost during the pandemic and putting everything on the line again – this is especially magnified as a new parent.

A mother who inspires you and why: My own mother and step-mother, of course! But I spend a lot of time online, and I’ve really enjoyed the content created by @destini.ann, a parenting coach on Instagram. Her daughter is a few years older than Hero. I like getting a glimpse of the future! And Destini’s advice on communication as a mom has been great to chew on.

Best piece of advice for a new mom: Trust your gut. On the important things, you’ll know what’s best for your family.

Your biggest hope for your children: I hope Hero will always feel safe and know that he is loved, no matter what.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day? I’ll be working a bit. It’s a Sunday, which means brunch in the dinner theater world! But I’m looking forward to a few surprise presents from my partner. What a crazy year! We did it!
