Hometown: Kirkland, WA
First job: Newspaper delivery–American Journal, Seattle Times.
Favorite ways to spend your free time in WA: Hiking, boating, exploring, gardening, eating and drinking the local bounty.
Your biggest accomplishment and why: Leading a team of individuals who learn, grow and work together in a supportive and fun environment. I have learned a lot about myself coaching others through situations similar to my own experiences. This has helped me be a more passionate, understanding and creative leader. My proudest moments are when my team is proud of themselves. It isn’t about my skills but the skills I can help develop in others.
The biggest obstacle you overcame: Directing my passion from anger to acceptance. Using it as a motivator to action, not the reason for action, and allowing honest results not manipulated by my own bias. I believe our biggest setback is not accepting reality for what it is, but instead living in what could have been and will never be.
Someone who inspires you and why: Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food Movement. He started a movement based on traditional food values that has spread across the globe helping to preserve not just endangered food products and practices but how we respect our planet and all its creatures. We have already taken control over nature, but what are our intensions? A fare equitable society that celebrates our differences and similarities.
Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Let your passion inspire you, not control you. If something upsets you, look at it from opposing views and realize everyone has different perceptions. I love my career but not every place I have worked. Both evolve independently.
Favorite quote: “I understand there’s a guy inside me who wants to lay in bed, smoke weed all day, and watch cartoons and old movies. My whole life is a series of stratagems to avoid and outwit that guy.” –Anthony Bourdain
Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I can’t whistle.
What makes someone fabulous: Passion for life.
